I have often wondered what if Harry had decided to give up on the search for horcruxes and instead had engaged in the quest for the hallows.

Did he do it because he was supposed to do it out of some responsibility ?
Did he do it because that was the right thing to do ?
Did he really have a choice ?

P.S. In my head all those questions have an affirmative answer. I guess 100 points to gryffindor then 😀

The answer to your question is this Quote from book 6

It was, he thought, the difference between being dragged into the arena to face a battle to the death and walking into the arena with your head held high. Some people, perhaps, would say that there was little to choose between the two ways, but Dumbledore knew – and so do I, thought Harry, with a rush of fierce pride, and so did my parents – that there was all the difference in the world.

I think because Harry's family was destroyed by Voldy, he felt so strongly about destroying him..and going after the horcruxes was the only way to destroy him..If he had gone for the hallows, there would have been a lot more personal benefit/power for him, but I guess ever since book 1, the belief that he is the one who kills Voldy in the end is instilled in him, and strengthens over time.
