it must matter, no ?

So today I was thinking, when Independence did happen, in India with all the historic preludes and struggles, what was the common man doing ? No, no it did not arise out of some deep philosophical quest for answers. Neither do I want to sound un-patriotic or raise fingers on anyone’s patriotic duty. I am just intrigued. Follows why.

I was reading some stuff on osama, the politician’s version , the military’s version and all that jazz. What must the common man in Pakistan be thinking ? I am sure with all the instability in and outside (read surrounding) the country life must be difficult as hell. With what random bombings and other such disturbances, what must be the thoughts in his head ? relief or panic ? or does it really matter ?

I can never physically witness (or be part of) what went on when we were fighting for freedom and independence. And as Tyler has put it rather revolutionarily, that’s the saddest truth of our generation, that we have nothing to fight for except ourselves and our individuality (and this I state is my assessment of his words, with my limited capabilities). So does it even matter when a guy whom you have been trying to track down for 10 years, drops dead suddenly, in your arms ? (oh, I don’t condone what happened on 26/11 and 9/11. Don’t be so judgmental!)

The common man only cares about his safety and 2 time ka khana (daily meals). Must be the (rather sad?) reality of our times.
Oh and yes, I am not sure if what follows will make anything any better or worse. And I also hope, Tyles is wrong and we do find something worth throwing our lives for, why not individually ?

There are still so many causes to fight for – look around you, and see what all needs to be fixed. And I'm not taking about the Macro level ideologies, but simple micro level stuff.

All issues are seen with a cynical eye now. Are the charities work for real? Are the Governments working for Real? The person who called himself Saint and imparts wisdom, is he for real? And a lot of times they are NOT Real … contrary to what Tyler says I think people are very quick to attach themselves to any and every cause or person. I think our generation doesn't even think for themselves … they are just too quick to become a follower.

But I know what you meant – A common man really just cares for their 2 meals and a roof over their head. Personally I do not think there is anything wrong with it. It is called keeping life simple and trying to solve 'issues' that ARE in your hand rather than the ones which are SOLD to you via Govt. and Media.

I think it's far harder to find something worthwhile to spend a lifetime on. A community passion (say freedom of a country) is easier to get aligned to. However, standing up & saying this is who I am and I will fight to stay true to myself doesn't come easy and takes a lot of strength…so I am not sure if it's a sad truth, it's infact the tougher struggle!

I have seen the common man forget his/her safety and fight the injustice going on around him/her. Find against the corruption, fight against the violence and fight for justice for girl child. It is actually quite sad situation if the common man just cares about his/her own safety and 2 times khana. Life is (should be) more than that, isnt it? It is true, that common man needs to be more active and should go beyond just talking about change, having opinions and criticizing the govt. After all, the govt is formed out of "common (wo)men" who wanted to bring about a change (seems like a joke saying this wrt our govt..but still ;))

Neha: Life should be more than your self, but how to segregate the real issues from the marketed ones?

Upasna: Yes, thats an altogether different story 🙂

tanvi: Exactly. Just because the common man is common, not anything should be sold to him!!

calvin: Yes. I think somewhere most of the global issues' solution can start from the self.

Ketaki: 🙂 Its a long battle of balance. I hope we get to do our share once we decide.

Agree with Neha. Though I have to say, I follow the principle 'charity begins at home'. I would like to believe, when I have taken somewhat care of my duties as a daughter/wife/mother, I would rise up to take some micro level duties surrounding me even if not related to me.
